Three tornadoes touched down in NJ during Ida; debris launched miles into the air

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (WCBS 880) — Three tornadoes touched down in New Jersey as Ida rocked the region overnight Wednesday into Thursday, the National Weather Service confirmed.

In a preliminary report, the NWS said at least six total tornadoes came from Ida in the area, with three in New Jersey.

The three Jersey tornadoes touched down in Mullica Hill, Edgewater Park and Princeton

NWS’ Mount Holly location confirmed the Edgewater Park tornado was an EF-1, with peak winds of up to 90 mph. The agency added that the twister moved all the way to Bristol, Pennsylvania.

An EF-0 tornado was also confirmed in Princeton, with peak winds of up to 75 mph. The NWS says it began near the Princeton Country Club and tracked northward.

A storm survey released late Thursday revealed the Mullica Hill tornado was an EF-3, with estimated maximum winds of 150 mph.

The National Weather Service, earlier in the day, had said the tornado was “impressive” and had the ability to throw debris up to 23,000 feet in the air.

Some properties in Mullica Hill were completely destroyed as a result.

A tornado that touched down in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania was a confirmed EF-2, with an estimated peak winds of up to 130 mph. Fort Washington is about 30 miles from the New Jersey border.
