NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Trader Joe's is opening a new outpost in Harlem, the grocery store chain said Wednesday.
The company inked a lease for a 28,000-square-foot space on the lower level of a building in progress at 121 W. 125th St., between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and Malcolm X boulevards, the site's developers said in a release.
The new building, known as the Urban League Empowerment Center, will house the National Urban League's new headquarters and conference center, as well as a new Urban Civil Rights Experience Museum, the release said.
It will also be home to a Target store, at least 170 units of affordable housing, below-market office space for local nonprofits, nearly 90,000 square feet of retail space and approximately 70,000 square feet of Class A office space.
The entire project is expected to wrap up in 2023, the release noted.
"Now, as always, Trader Joe's appreciates being a part of a new opportunity, a source for nourishment, and a safe, welcoming environment for people to come together and shop," the chain's PR director, Kenya Friend-Daniel, said in a statement.
"We are excited to open our doors in this groundbreaking location, and we look forward to serving Harlem, a community rich in culture and diversity, as their neighborhood grocery store," Friend-Daniel added.
