NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The ultimate comfort food is now getting its own ice cream flavor.

Brooklyn-based ice cream maker Van Leeuwen is debuting a mac and cheese flavor on Wednesday in celebration of National Macaroni and Cheese Day.

Free scoops of the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese ice cream will be handed out at Van Leeuwen's Union Square location starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The new ice cream will be sold online and at Van Leeuwen stores in New York City, the American Dream mall in East Rutherford, Los Angeles, and Houston.

Van Leeuwen partnered with Kraft on the new limited edition flavor, which is described as "a cool, creamy scoop of ice cream that brings that comforting, nostalgic feeling from a warm bowl of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese."

People reports Van Leeuwen created the creamy treat using powdered cheese from Kraft Macaroni & Cheese boxes.

“We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream. That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with,” said Emily Violett, Sr. Associate Brand Manager for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. “As big fans of Van Leeuwen, we knew they’d be the perfect partner to create this ice cream with us. Not only does it taste delicious, but it’s also made with high quality ingredients and contains no artificial flavors, preservatives, or dyes just like our Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.”
