NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A construction van exploded outside a home in Queens damaging several homes early Friday morning, police confirmed with 1010 WINS.
The explosion happened at around 7 a.m. outside 131-16 133rd Street, near 133rd Avenue in Ozone Park.
The van, which was being used for construction work, contained natural gas canisters and a half-dozen lithium-ion batteries. One of the canisters leaked and exploded, possibly triggered by the van’s remote starter, though the exact cause is still under investigation, according to FDNY Deputy Fire Chief George Healy.

Firefighters secured the lithium-ion batteries, which remained intact during the explosion, to prevent any additional damage.

The blast damaged five homes and five cars in the vicinity. The NYC Department of Buildings is inspecting the homes, but initial reports indicate the structural damage is minor.
Several people were on the street when the explosion occurred, but no injuries were reported.
Officials said no criminal activity is suspected.

The NYPD Bomb Squad responded to the scene.
Healy urged everyone to store gas canisters and lithium-ion batteries properly to avoid potential tragedies.
No injuries were reported.
An investigation is ongoing.
