NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- FDNY officials on Sunday announced the death of a veteran firefighter due to COVID-19.
Joseph Ferrugia, 61, became the thirteenth FDNY member to die from the illness, officials said.
“This horrific illness has taken far too many lives, and now it has killed a man who bravely served New Yorkers for three decades,” FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro wrote on Instagram.
“He ran toward danger his entire career, searching for those trapped by flames and doing all he could to save them. Our entire Department mourns his loss,” the statement added.
Ferrugia, a Long Island resident, joined the FDNY in 1990 where he was assigned to Ladder 142 in Queens.
He is survived by three adult children and three siblings, the FDNY said.
