NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- More than 50 people, some armed with weapons and setting fires, were arrested Wednesday night in the West Village after they "attempted to hijack a peaceful protest," the NYPD said.

Some protesters also threw eggs at officers and another person was spotted breaking a store window, police said.

Initially, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of midtown Manhattan for a "Count Every Vote" demonstration, to demand that all votes be counted in the presidential election.

The group marched down to Washington Square Park in the West Village. The crowd dispersed, but a bit later, a violent and chaotic scene erupted in others areas of the West Village, but the scene at 7th Avenue above West Houston Street, became particularly dangerous.

The NYPD said 58 people were arrested during the protests. Most of them were charged with disorderly conduct and received desk appearances or court summonses, including a Pennsylvania woman who allegedly spat at an NYPD sergeant.

One protester was also charged with assaulting a police officer for allegedly punching NYPD Chief Terence Monahan.

"We appreciate and value the importance of freedom of speech," the NYPD tweeted Wednesday night. "Our top priority is and always will be safety. We have arrested more than 20 individuals who attempted to hijack a peaceful protest by lighting fires, throwing garbage and eggs in Manhattan."

The NYPD tweeted several photos of weapons it said it confiscated, including knives. "These weapons, confiscated at protests tonight, put others at risk," the NYPD tweeted. "Bringing weapons to peaceful protests cannot and will not be tolerated ...Anyone caught with a weapon will be arrested.

Police said a stun gun, spray paint and M80 firecrackers were also confiscated.

Two protesters were hit with weapons charges, including one who had the stun gun and another who had two daggers, police said.
