NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An NYPD officer was met with cheers and applause, as he was released from the hospital on Thursday after being shot in the back while attempting to make an arrest in the Bronx earlier this week.

"Today we got to see Police Officer Daniel Vargas head home from the hospital in good spirits after being shot in the back on January 26th," NYPD Chief Rodney Harrison captioned a video shared to Twitter.

The 31-year-old officer was driving through the Soundview section of the Bronx around 10:29 p.m. on Tuesday as part of the Gun Violence Suppression Division.

Members of the division encountered a 24-year-old man near Lafayette Avenue and White Plains Road and initiated a stop leading to an exchange of gunfire where Vargas was shot once in the lower back below his bulletproof vest.

Police recovered a firearm at the scene and a suspect was taken into custody.

Vargas is expected to make a full recovery.
