NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — New York City was visited by some unusual holiday tourists over the weekend.
A pod of dolphins was seen passing through Flushing Bay, just off the north coast of Queens, on Sunday afternoon.
Video posted to Twitter by the NYPD showed the pod passing by an NYPD Harbor Boat, and some dolphins were even seen surfacing.
Queens Borough President Donovan Richards reposted the video to his Twitter account, writing, “Only in Queens.”
While dolphin sightings are not extremely rare in New York City, typically sightings only occur during the summer months, when the water is warmer.
It remains unclear what brought the dolphins to New York City waters. NYPD officials also did not say how long the pod stayed around the five boroughs.
Dolphins were most recently spotted in the East River back in March.
According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, pilot whales, and Risso's dolphins can often be seen off the south shore of Long Island.
Sightings of bottlenose dolphins are the most common since they live in coastal waters, such as harbors and bays, the DEC added.
