Walmart is finally coming to New York City — sort of.
The big-box chain is partnering with Instacart to offer grocery delivery in parts of New York City beginning late Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal first reported.
Grocery deliveries will be available through Instacart in sections of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.
Instacart will charge a fee to send a gig worker to a store nearby, outside of the city, to fulfill the order, according to the outlet. No physical stores are planned for the city.
Walmart and Instacart have worked together to deliver groceries in other markets; a Walmart spokesperson told the Journal that the model is being expanded to reach customers where there is a low density of the physical stores.
“It’s about reaching more customers,” the spokesperson said.
Walmart has tried and failed to open up shop in the city over the years, usually always running into local opposition. While former Mayor Michael Bloomberg supported the store’s presence, Mayor Bill de Blasio early in his term said he didn’t feel the store “belongs” in the city.
