NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A woman was killed after her car was sandwiched between two tractor-trailer trucks in a crash that sent towering flames over the Cross Bronx Expressway early Tuesday morning, police said.

The woman reportedly rear-ended the truck in front of her and was then struck by the second truck from behind in the westbound lanes around 12:30 a.m.

Residents reported hearing an explosion around the time of the crash near the University Avenue overpass in Morris Heights. Video from the scene shows the car and both trucks consumed by a huge, raging fire.

Both truck drivers were able to get out of their trucks with minor injuries and refused medical attention.

The crash caused major delays for several hours Tuesday, with the expressway closed as firefighters battled the inferno and police investigated.

After the fire was put out, nearly nothing was left of the two trailers except for the frames.

The victim has not been identified as the investigation continues.
