NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A 12-year-old girl and her dog were struck and killed by an SUV as they crossed a street in New Jersey on Monday, police said.

Ananta Ahuja, the victim, was walking her dog when they were hit near the corner of Rabbit Hill Road and Abbington Lane just after 5:30 p.m., West Windsor police said.

The 65-year-old man driving the SUV stopped and talked to police.

Ananta was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. The dog was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ananta was a 7th grader at Community Middle School, West Windsor-Plainsboro school officials said.

"Our condolences go out to her family and friends," Superintendent David Aderhold said in a letter to the school community.

No charges have been filed but the investigation is ongoing.
