FORT LEE, N.J. (1010 WINS) — An armed man who allegedly barricaded himself in a Fort Lee home Saturday morning was fatally shot by police.

Officers from the Fort Lee Police Department responded to a 911 call at a home on John Street around 8:13 a.m., the state attorney general's office said in a statement.

Police shot the man, who was pronounced dead at 10:39 a.m., the office said, noting that it is investigating the shooting as per protocol.

Neighbors at the Cedar Court condominium told CBS 2 that the man barricaded himself with a teenager.

Officers then attempted to talk to him for hours, and when officers attempted to extract the teen from the third floor, the man became aggressive, throwing items out of the house.

The man reportedly had a knife.

"Eventually the SWAT came and everybody, and they brought the crane," building superintendent Daniel Sulozeqi told the outlet. "Very good thinking to grab the girl out, but when they went to go with the crane, the guy come out on his deck with a knife and threatened the police. They shot him right up there. They had no choice."

Mayor Mark Socolich said the man was visiting from out of state.

He added that one officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated.

The AG's office said the investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
