NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A man was convicted of murder on Friday after fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend 25 times over two years ago on Long Island, prosecutors said.

Wayne Chambers, 51, on July 22, 2021, picked up Sandra McIntosh, his ex-girlfriend, a 46-year-old nurse, from Stony Brook University Hospital after her shift.

The couple had broken up months before the incident following a six-year relationship.

The two got into McIntosh's 2010 white Lexus and at about 8 p.m. police received a report about seeing Chambers in the same vehicle driving erratically and then stopping the car on Woodland Avenue in Holtsville.

Witnesses saw Chambers outside the Lexus in a physical altercation with McIntosh. Witnesses also reported hearing McIntosh's screams and observed Chambers violently assaulting her and trying to drag her by her hair out of the woods.

Chambers had stabbed her at least 25 times, causing fatal wounds to her neck, back, heart, and lungs, prosecutors said.

When Chambers noticed the witnesses, he quickly ran away from the scene in McIntosh's Lexus, leaving her severely injured.

McIntosh died of her injuries within two hours of the attack.

After the stabbing, Chambers fled the scene in her vehicle and was later traced to a location in the Bronx, where the Lexus was found with blood stains inside and outside the vehicle.

DNA evidence confirmed a mix of McIntosh's and Chamber's blood on these stains.

Surveillance footage from near where the Lexus was abandoned showed a man resembling Chambers leaving the car.

Chambers went to a female acquaintance's home in the Bronx on the evening of the same day, she told investigators that  upon arriving at her home, she observed that Chambers had a cut on his finger that was covered by a Band-Aid.

She also observed a bloody spot on his green shirt.

Cell site data also placed Chamber's phone near the murder scene.

"The domestic violence murder of Sandra McIntosh was a tragedy that should not have happened," Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said. "If you or anyone you know is a victim of domestic violence, I urge you to contact the Police Department or the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office to help us prevent tragedies like this one."

Chambers was arrested on July 30, 2021.

He was found guilty of second-degree murder and now faces up to 25 years to life in prison at his sentencing on Jan. 9, 2024.
