Man, 56, arrested in fatal stabbing at Newark ShopRite parking lot

NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of a man accused of fatally stabbing another man during an argument in the parking lot of a ShopRite in New Jersey earlier this week.

Julius Gaines, 56, was charged with degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, at about 7:15 p.m., police responded to the supermarket parking lot located at 206 Springfield Ave. in Newark where Rodney Mayes, 56, was stabbed during a "verbal dispute" with Gaines.

Mayes was transported to University Hospital, where he died.
