SAYVILLE, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Armed robbers shot a man during a Long Island home invasion on Sunday night, Suffolk County police said.
The victim was entering a house on Greenbrier Lane in Sayville—just as two masked thieves were fleeing the home after robbing people inside around 11:40 p.m.
As the victim encountered the two men at a side door, one of them shot him twice with a handgun, police said.
He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Moments before the shooting, the two thieves had entered the home through an unlocked side door and robbed a "small gathering" of people, police said.
They stole cell phones, jewelry and cash from the people attending the gathering, according to cops. It appears none of them were physically hurt.
The suspects fled the scene and remained at large on Monday.
Investigators believe the home was targeted, according to police, who said the break-in happened during a card game.
The owner of the home has been cited in the past for running illegal card games out of his home, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to confidentially call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8542 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
