Man steals BMW at gunpoint, flees officers on Long Island: police

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Long Island man who stole a BMW at gunpoint and fled police was arrested after officers deployed tire-deflating stop sticks and pursued him on foot early Wednesday, authorities said.

Suffolk County Police said Jahmohri Mitchell, 21, was charged with robbery, criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.

Mitchell, of Shirley, allegedly stole the BMW X3 at gunpoint in the parking lot of Cirella's Restaurant on Broadhollow Road in Melville around 12:45 a.m.

Police said Mitchell was armed with a gun when he approached two people in the parking lot and demanded the vehicle.

The victims complied, and Mitchell fled in the BMW, police said.

Officers spotted the BMW on Long Island Avenue in Medford and attempted to pull the vehicle over, but Mitchell kept going, according to police.

Officers then deployed stop sticks on Mill Road to pierce the tires of the BMW, police said.

Multiple officers pursued Mitchell as he fled on foot, according to police, who said he was taken into custody in Medford just after 1:30 a.m.

Mitchell was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.
