The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was breaking windows with his sword at the Deliworks on Highway 31 near Sandhill Road around 3:20 p.m., officials said.

Raritan and Flemington officers confronted him as he walked along the highway, and he charged at them causing the officers to use “less lethal munitions,” according to police.

The munitions weren’t enough to bring him down though, and the man fled into nearby woods, said authorities.

It was at this point that several businesses went into lockdown out of fear that the sword man could target them next.

A bevy of police officers from Readington, West Amwell, Tewksbury, Lambertville, Clinton Township, the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, the county’s parks department and the county’s SWAT team joined the officers already on the scene from Raritan and Flemington to search for the man.

They found him around 4:30 p.m. and convinced him to drop his sword, according to police.

The man was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and authorities charged him with aggravated assault against a police officer, criminal mischief, obstruction of justice and a weapons offense.

Officials reported no injuries during the incident.
