NORTH BERGEN, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- At least seven New Jersey Transit buses in a parking lot in North Bergen caught fire on Wednesday, according to reports, sending massive plumes of smoke into the air that were visible as far as Manhattan's East Side (pictured, above).

The buses were parked at a lot near the intersection of 18th Street and Tonnelle Avenue.
"At approximately 4:30 p.m. a fire was reported at an NJ TRANSIT bus storage facility on Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen. The seven buses involved were decommissioned and no longer in revenue service and in storage at the time," said a spokesperson for NJ Transit. "The buses were unoccupied at the time. New Jersey Transit Police are leading the investigation with assistance from local agencies. The cause of the fire is under investigation."
The North Bergen Police Department and the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department are responding.
"Our units and the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department are currently on the scene of a bus fire," wrote the NBPD on Twitter. "At this time there are no injuries have been reported and there is no threat to any structure."
It is unclear how the fire started.
Police cautioned residents to "expect heavy traffic delays in the area" and to "plan alternate routes, and please avoid the area if possible."
