WASHINGTON (1010 WINS) – President Donald Trump will sign an executive order Friday to make English the official language of the United States, the White House said Friday.

The order will also rescind a federal mandate from former President Bill Clinton requiring agencies and organizations receiving federal funding to provide language assistance to non-English speakers, according to a fact sheet on the impending order.

Those agencies and organizations will still be allowed to provide such documents to non-English speakers at their own discretion.

Currently, 32 U.S. states designate English as their official language, but there has never been an official language at the federal level.

It wasn’t immediately clear when on Friday Trump would sign the order.

The White House said the purpose of the order is to “promote unity, establish efficiency in the government and provide a pathway to civic engagement.”

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the order.
