NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A U.S. Navy petty officer who flew out to New York with a teddy bear to allegedly meet a 13-year-old girl at a Long Island train station with the intention of a sexual encounter was arrested last week, according to court documents.
Douglas Engstrom, 36, a divorced father of two children from Maryland, bought a ticket to JFK Airport, got on an Uber to meet a young girl he talked to online and was arrested on Dec. 16, as the girl turned out to be an undercover FBI agent, according to the feds.
On Dec. 6, Colleen Sheehan, a special agent with the FBI, posed as a 13-year old girl on the Whisper app.
Engstrom with the username "bleepbloorp" allegedly contacted her following a post she had made about no longer needing dental braces.
Sheehan said in multiple messages with "bleepbloorp" that she told him that she was a 13- year old girl in school, according to court documents.
In the messages, "bleepbloorp" told her that his name was Doug, he was 36 and that he lived in Maryland and worked for the U.S. Navy.
The user then expressed interest in engaging in sexual conduct, the document read.
Later on, "bleepbloorp" gave her his phone number and continued to make similar statements via text.
"He expressed interest in having oral, anal, and vaginal sex with me, including while I was unconscious," Sheehan said in the court document.
Officers determined that "bleepbloorp" was Engstrom based on the cell phone number and photos he sent to Sheehan.
On Dec. 14, Engstrom informed the girl that he booked a hotel and flight to visit her to engage in sexual conduct, according to the documents.
The FBI used the booking information to determine Engstrom's flight to JFK.
Once he arrived at the airport, officers followed him as he got onto an Uber and texted the girl that he was going to meet her at the Long Island Rail Road train station at Valley Stream.
He was arrested at the train station.
During the arrest, officers recovered a large teddy bear that Sheehan had asked him to bring in a text message sent the day before.
Engstrom was arraigned Monday and held without bond.
He now faces the possibility of 10 years to life in prison.
