NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A mandatory water conservation order has been issued by New Jersey American Water to customers in the western and southern regions of its Raritan water system.

The order comes as the utility works to repair a 36-inch water main break in Somerville.

Customers are asked to limit their water use to essential purposes and stop any outdoor water use such as sprinklers, watering of lawns, washing cars or filling pools until further notice.

Customers may experience reduced water pressure and/or discolored water during the repair process, which could take up to four days.

Updates will be posted at NewJerseyAmWater.com.

Meanwhile on Long Island, New York American Water is also asking customers to voluntarily limit all nonessential water use.

"The heatwave impacting Long Island is leading to extremely high water used by our customers and putting significant stress on the water supply," the utility said.

The order applies to customers in Merrick, North Merrick, Bellmore and North Bellmore customers.
