NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New Jersey reported more than 1,600 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, with five counties each reporting more than 150 new positive test results, Gov. Phil Murphy said.

The state reported 1,663 new positive COVID-19 test results on Tuesday, Murphy tweeted. Union County reported 238 cases; Essex reported 219; Hudson reported 181; Bergen reported 152; and Middlesex reported 151, its COVID-19 tracker shows.

"These numbers are sobering," the governor wrote on Twitter. "We are still in the midst of a pandemic and need everyone to take this seriously."

"Wear a mask. Social distance. Wash your hands," he added.

New Jersey also reported 14 new COVID-19 fatalities, bringing its death toll to 14,517. All 14 people who died passed away within the past nine days, Murphy noted.

As of Monday, 957 people in the state were hospitalized with confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases, 182 of whom were in intensive care and 68 of whom were on ventilators.
