LAWRENCE, N.J. (1010 WINS) – A 12-year-old boy from New Jersey was killed when Monday’s violent winds toppled a tree onto him as he played in his yard, police said.

The boy, who hasn’t been identified, was playing with a friend in his backyard on Eldridge Avenue in Lawrence Township shortly after 12 p.m. when “the tree was blown over by gusty winds,” according to police.

The tree struck the boy and caused fatal injuries, police said.

While officers were able to free the child from under the fallen tree and begin CPR, he was ultimately pronounced dead at Capital Health Regional Medical Center.

The boy’s friend was not physically injured in the incident.

An investigation into his death is ongoing, police said.

The Lawrence Township School District has counselors and therapy dogs available this week to assist students and staff.
