NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A New Jersey food company recalled Manischewitz dark chocolate coins Friday, less than a week before Hanukkah begins, the Food and Drug Administration said.
Manischewitz, based in Bayonne, recalled the dark chocolate coins because limited packages may contain undeclared milk.
If consumed without knowing, the coins could irritate those who have a milk sensitivity or cause a serious, even life-threatening, allergic reaction for those with milk allergies, the FDA said.
According to the FDA, the coins were predominantly distributed in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut between Sept. 26 and Nov. 28.
The recall was prompted by the company’s quality control department which noticed some bags labeled “Dark Chocolate Coins” included milk chocolate coins.
The visual signifier that can indicate the mistake is seeing gold foil-wrapped coins with blue netting (milk chocolate) in a dark chocolate package. Dark chocolate coins are wrapped in silver foil with red netting.
Mixed-up coins contain a lot code of 2283, the FDA said.
There have yet to be any reports of illness or injury in relation to the recall, the FDA said.
Retailers were informed of the mistake and have been instructed to remove the coins from their stores. Consumers may return purchased chocolate coins for credit or a refund.
Hanukkah begins Thursday, Dec. 7.
