PATERSON, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey police officer was arrested for allegedly attacking someone with a flashlight while he was on duty last month, prosecutors said Friday.

Paterson Police Officer Spencer Finch, 44, of Mahwah, has been charged with second-degree official misconduct, second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and tampering with public records or information, the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office said in a press release.

Finch is accused of hitting someone with a flashlight several times while he was on duty and in uniform on May 26, prosecutors said.

Finch is also charged with hitting the person with his hand and kneeing the person in the face, according to prosecutors.

After the attack, Finch signed and submitted a police report about the incident that included "several false statements," prosecutors said.

The prosecutor's office didn't immediately provide any additional information about the victim or the incident itself.

Finch is expected to appear in court on Saturday, the prosecutor's office said. His attorney information wasn't immediately available Friday.
