EDISON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- An off-duty New Jersey officer was charged in a drunken car crash where two of his passengers died, Somerset County Prosecutor said Wednesday.
Officials arrested 29-year-old Amitoj Oberoi in connection to a drunken car accident on Sunday, Aug. 27 on Somerset Street on Route 27 near Voorhees Avenue that killed his two passengers in Franklin Township, prosecutors said.
Detectives charged him with two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide On Wednesday, Aug. 30.
Franklin Township Police also issued Oberoi with motor vehicle violations for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, careless driving, improper passing, and failure to keep right.
According to officials, Oberoi was driving a 2007 Audi Q7 southbound on Somerset Street at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle, striking several trees, lamp posts, and a utility pole before coming to a stop.
An ambulance transported Oberoi to an area trauma center with undisclosed injuries where he was listed in stable condition and remains in police custody while he recovers from his injuries.
Oberoi was over the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration limit at the time of the incident, according to an investigation.
The vehicle was also occupied by three passengers - a 29-year-old man who was a front seat passenger. He sustained minor injuries, and refused medical attention at the scene.
A 24-year-old passenger was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The third passenger was a a 20-year-old left rear seated passenger who became trapped in the vehicle following the crash and required extrication.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation remains ongoing.
