ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — An Atlantic City police officer was charged with theft on Tuesday for spending over $35,000 of $100,000 that was accidentally deposited into his account, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Bank employees inadvertently deposited a $100,000 check into the account of LaQuay DuBose, 37, of Atlantic City on March 21.

By the time bank personnel realized the mistake on March 27, DuBose had spent over $35,000 in six days, prosecutors said.

The bank withdrew the money and closed DuBose’s account, leaving him with a negative balance of $35,903.17, officials said.

The officer caught a charge for third-degree theft following an investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards and Accountability Unit.

DuBose was hired into the Atlantic City Police Department as a Class II Officer, and was promoted to a full-time officer in 2019.
