The Bergen County teen was charged with burglary on Wednesday after police were called to Van Winkle Ave. in Garfield with reports of someone breaking into a vehicle around 4:20 a.m.

Responding officers spotted the suspect from a description they were provided but the man fled the scene by "jumping numerous fences between the yards,” according to police.

Cops, along with a county K-9, chased the suspect into an abandoned building near River Drive and Faber Place, officials said.

Once the officers were inside the building, some of them heard someone coughing from inside of the ductwork.

“The Garfield Fire Department responded and were able to cut an opening to the ductwork, where officers located the suspect inside and placed him in custody,” Garfield Police Capt. Richard Uram said in a statement.

The suspect, an 18-year-old Garfield man, was charged with third-degree burglary, resisting by flight, receiving stolen property among other charges. Authorities said they also found several items on the teen which they believe were stolen from others.

The investigation remains ongoing but more charges are expected.
