The Elmer resident, 36-year-old Marcus Kidd, worked at the Salem County Correctional Facility where he was offered $5,000 to smuggle the phone inside back in May, court documents show.

Kidd met with an associate of the detainee at a parking lot in Elmer where he was given the cash and the phone to bring inside.

The ex-officer pleaded guilty to one count of attempted extortion under color of official right.

Kidd now faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 20.
