Around 6:50 p.m., the inmate allegedly stole the officer’s pepper spray, sprayed it at nearby officers to give himself space and then started punching and kicking the man in the head and body.

He also sprayed the officer he was attacking in his face with the stolen pepper spray, according to Police Benevolent Association 105 — the union that represents corrections officers at the prison.

The officer suffered severe cuts and bruising to his head and was taken to a nearby hospital after the attack.

Neither the inmate nor the officer were named in the PBA’s announcement.

The New Jersey Department of Corrections Special Investigations Division is investigating the attack.
