Back in July, police responded to Hudson Regional Hospital at 55 Meadowlands Parkway in Secaucus after a call came in about a bomb in the hospital.
Cops and bomb detection dogs showed up and searched the hospital. While in front of an unlocked closet within an office, the police dog gave a “positive indication,” officials said.
Inside of the closet, police found a large cache of rifles, shotguns and handguns, along with assorted ammunition for the firearms. A total of 11 handguns of various calibers and 27 rifles/shotguns were discovered. A Kriss Vector .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine was also found and determined to be an assault rifle. Another 14 round high-capacity handgun magazine was also seized, authorities said.
“The unsecured storage of a large cache of weaponry, especially in this location, certainly creates a risk to public safety,” said Chief Dennis Miller. “I commend the efforts and professionalism of all the police personnel involved in this investigation and am thankful this situation was resolved without anyone being harmed.”
The bomb threat was later determined to be a hoax but an investigation of the incident led to the arrest of 46-year-old Elmwood Park resident Reuven Alonalayoff, the hospital’s marketing director, on Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Alonalayoff was charged with possession of an assault firearm and two counts of possession of a high capacity magazine.
