The state is waiving its 6.625% sales tax for items like computers, art supplies and sports equipment until Sept. 5.
The savings will apply to both online and in-person purchases, though some items have price limits that if exceeded will cause certain items to be subject to tax.
The purchases must be for individual, non-business use as well to be exempt.
The state expects the holiday to cost about $75 million in lost tax revenue.
The full list of eligible items is listed below:
-Computers less than $3,000: The state’s definition of computers extends to any computational electronic, including smart phones, tablets, graphing calculators and other devices.
-School computer supplies less than $1,000: Hard drives, printers, CDs, etc.
-School art supplies: Paints, sketch pads, clay, etc.
-School instructional materials: Textbooks, workbooks, etc.
-Generic school supplies: Binders, writing utensils, rulers, etc.
-Sport or recreational equipment: Cleats, balls, helmets, etc.
For an extended list of items you can check the New Jersey state website.
There’s no limit to the number of items an individual can buy while still receiving the tax exemption, and buying separate items won’t count toward the price limits for computers or computer supplies.
