Lawrence police spokesman Lt. Chris Longo told NJ.com it appears the incident began after John Kachmar got into an argument around 9 a.m. with the person about whether the land was private property.
The person, who was uninjured, then called 911 and reported being fired upon near the park’s footbridge over Brunswick Pike, north of Bakers Basin Road.
Longo told the outlet that arriving patrol officers heard gunfire in a nearby wooded area.
He said officers allegedly saw Kachmar run into a nearby home, where he apparently barricaded himself.
Police and a number of other agencies were at the house all day on Wednesday because they thought he was inside, and they executed multiple search warrants in the 3000 block of Brunswick Pike.
The spokesman said officers arrested Kachmar in the early stages of the incident, and police eventually left the house late Wednesday.
Kachmar, a Lawrence resident, is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a deadly weapon and related firearm possession charges.
Longo told NJ.com Thursday that the investigation was still active and more charges and arrests were expected.
