NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A man pleaded guilty to desecration of human remains in connection with murders in New Jersey after detectives discovered black bags containing body parts at a home in Ocean County, prosecutors announced Wednesday.
Jared Krysiak, 34, of Brick, pleaded guilty on Monday to charges related to the murder of Kerry Rollason, one of four individuals charged in connection with the crime, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer announced. Billhimer said that Krysiak allegedly helped scatter body parts in trash bags, which were discovered by detectives.
According to court documents, on July 5, police found Maxwell Johnston, 35, at a residence in Toms River; he was wanted in connection with the murder of Gabriella Caroleo, 25. At the scene, police also found and were able to get Krysiak, Danielle Bolstad, 42, and Jared Palumbo, 36, to exit the home voluntarily.
Johnston and Elizabeth Mascarelli, 29, remained inside the residence, and police learned that Johnston was armed. Negotiators tried to get Johnston to surrender himself but he refused. After hours, Mascarelli stepped outside and was taken to Community Medical Center to be treated for injuries sustained throughout the standoff.
Johnston was found in a bedroom with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. After detectives obtained a search warrant, they found a defaced .22 caliber handgun and a 9mm handgun in the residence.
While investigating Caroleo's murder, police found evidence of another killing at the Toms River residence on July 3, prosecutors said. Law enforcement then searched a property in Jackson Township where additional evidence was believed to be located.
Detectives discovered numerous body parts in black bags during their search on July 13 along with additional evidence connected to the murder, including a hatchet, prosecutors said.
The next day, the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office conducted a post mortem examination of the body parts, and was able to identify the victim as the owner of the Ravenwood Drive residence, Kerry Rollason, 56. The cause of death was determined as multiple gunshot wounds in addition to blunt force trauma, and the manner of death to be homicide.
Further investigation revealed that Mascarelli allegedly conspired with Johnston and was responsible for Rollason's death. It was also determined that Mascarelli, Krysiak, and Bolstad assisted Johnston in dismembering Rollason's body, and that Mascarelli, Krysiak, Bolstad, and Palumbo helped Johnston dispose of the body in Jackson Township. The motive for the murder was not immediately clear.
On July 13, Krysiak was charged with hindering apprehension and desecration of human remains. Initially a fugitive, he was arrested on July 16, in Marlboro, New Jersey. He has been held at the Ocean County Jail since his arrest.
On Oct. 24, Krysiak, Bolstad and Palumbo were indicted on charges of hindering apprehension and desecration/disturbing of human remains, prosecutors said. Mascarelli was also indicted by a charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the death of Rollason, along with numerous weapons offenses, hindering apprehension, and desecration/disturbing of human remains. Mascarelli later pled guilty to aggravated manslaughter.
At his sentencing on Feb. 7, 2025, the state will seek a term of eight years in New Jersey State Prison for Krysiak, prosecutors announced.
