Julio Amaro-Vasquez, 33, of Ridgefield, is accused of strangling the child to the point of unconsciousness and then trying to sexually assault them.

The child, who is under 13 years old, survived the attack in Fairview.

Amaro-Vasquez faces a long list of charges, including attempted murder, attempted aggravated sexual assault, aggravated assault, attempted sexual assault by contact and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail ahead of his first court appearance.

A Fairview woman, Marlin Cervantes-Santos, 30, was also arrested and accused of directing two children to provide false information to police during the investigation, prosecutors said.

She was charged with two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

According to prosecutors, she and Amaro-Vasquez were in a dating relationship.
