CARTERET, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A New Jersey man whose pit bulls mauled a 3-year-old boy to death earlier this month will not face criminal charges, according to a report.
The man's dogs broke through a fence and into a neighboring yard in Carteret on March 16, killing 3-year-old Aziz Ahmed and seriously injuring his mother.
In a letter sent to Ahmed's family and obtained by NJ.com, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone wrote that an investigation did not turn up "intentional, knowing or reckless criminal conduct."
"In this case, based upon the information known at the time, it would appear as if no law has been violated," Ciccone wrote, according to the outlet.
"This, despite the well-intentioned demands for justice, no charges will presently be filed," she added. "Again, this decision is based upon the facts and evidence known to law enforcement at this time."
Two New Jersey politicians, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez, have said they will look at tightening the state's laws related to dog attacks.
"Our sincerest, deepest sympathies go out to the family for the loss of their child in this unspeakable tragedy. No family should have to endure such pain," the said in a statement provided to the outlet.
"We will thoroughly review existing legislation and work with the sponsors on the best possible course of action," they added.
