NEWARK (1010 WINS) – New Jersey state police apprehended an escaped prisoner and registered sex offender on Monday who allegedly fled a transport van outside a Newark hospital last week.

Nicholas Voutsas, 25, was being transported in a New Jersey Department of Health medical van en route to University Hospital in Newark when he escaped around 9 a.m. last Thursday, police said Saturday.

Before eluding police for several days, Voutsas was last seen near Bergen Street and South Orange Avenue in Newark, just outside the hospital.

Police circulated Voutsas' image on Saturday in the hope someone would recognize him and aid their manhunt.

The circumstances surrounding his arrest Monday were not immediately clear.

Police said Voutsas is a Tier 2 registered sex offender but didn't provide details on his offenses.
