NJ reports 1,282 new coronavirus cases, 2nd-most in one day since May

TRENTON (1010 WINS) -- New Jersey reported 1,282 new coronavirus cases on Sunday as the state works to get its numbers back down amid a recent uptick.

The number of new cases is the most since Oct. 8, when 1,301 cases were reported. The Oct. 8 number was the highest single-day total since May 29.

Gov. Phil Murphy also reported seven more deaths from the virus Sunday.

The state's total number of cases is now 220,013, while the death toll is at 14,422 people. The death toll doesn't include 1,789 probable deaths.

New Jersey has reported more than 900 cases on four of the past five days. There were 1,282 on Sunday; 958 on Saturday; 823 on Friday; 973 on Thursday; 953 on Wednesday; and 993 on Tuesday.

The largest number of new cases Sunday was in Essex County, which reported 139 positives. Hudson County reported 131 and Ocean County reported 121.

There were 732 patients hospitalized Sunday, including 169 in intensive care and 67 on ventilators.

The state's transmission rate declined to 1.15. A transmission rate above 1 indicates that for every infected person, the virus is spreading to at least one other person on average.
