TRENTON (1010 WINS) -- New Jersey reported a record number of new coronavirus cases for the second day in a row on Sunday, as Gov. Phil Murphy warned that "a second wave of COVID is now here."
The state reported 4,540 more positive cases, a day after it recorded 4,395 new cases Saturday— surpassing the previous high of 4,391 new cases on April 17 during the spring peak.
Hudson County saw the most new cases at 413, while Camden County reported 400 and Bergen County recorded 397.
Hospitalizations rose to 2,004 in the state, with 392 patients in intensive care and 135 on ventilators.
"These numbers are ALARMING and continue to rise," Murphy tweeted. "Take this seriously. Wear a mask. Social distance. Stay safe."
"As we begin the holiday season, plan accordingly and keep social distancing and safety in mind," the governor added. "We MUST redouble our efforts and crush the curve like we did last spring. Our lives literally depend on it."
The record highs in New Jersey came as New York state reported more than 5,000 new COVID cases on Friday and Saturday— a level not seen since the peak in April.
New Jersey also reported 18 more deaths, bringing its death toll to 14,765 people, not including 1,801 probable deaths.
Cases in the state have now reached 279,274 since the pandemic began.
