NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A sinkhole that opened up on I-80 eastbound forced the closure of the highway in Morris County, officials announced Thursday morning.

The giant sinkhole appeared on the right shoulder of I-80 near milepost 34 around 7:45 a.m., impacting the stretch of I-80 eastbound just after Exit 34 in Wharton.

NJ DOT crews responded to the scene and are currently assessing the damage and designing repairs. There is no estimated timeline for reopening the highway.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and seek alternate routes. A detour is in place as follows:

I-80 Eastbound Detour Instructions:
• Drivers on I-80 eastbound should take Exit 34 to Route 15/Wharton/Dover/Sparta.
• Stay in the right lane and follow signs for Route 15/Jefferson/Dover/Sparta.
• Stay in the left lane on North Main Street and merge onto Route 15 southbound toward I-80/Dover.
• Stay left and take the exit back onto I-80 eastbound.
