LACEY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey zoo has closed this week and is working with federal officials after a duck and goose found dead tested positive for bird flu.

The Popcorn Park Animal Refuge in Lacey was closed Monday and will stay shuttered through Friday "to fully sanitize and manage the situation for future exposure," the zoo said in a statement.

To ensure that none of the zoo's nearly 200 animals get sick, the zoo added that it's "working closely with the United States Department of Agriculture and the state Department of Agriculture."

The 45-year-old Popcorn Park is expected to reopen at 11 a.m. Saturday to visitors.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control said that despite the fact that bird flu viruses usually do not sicken people, "there have been some rare cases of human infection,"

The agency adds that human cases "have ranged in severity from no symptoms or mild illness to severe disease that resulted in death."
