NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Manhattan Assemblywoman Deborah Glick faced sharp criticism on social media Friday after taking the stance that religious zealotry has led to overpopulation on Earth.

“World population in 1950- 2.5 billion 2015- 7.3 billion,” Glick wrote in a Tweet. “The lack of family planning Because of Religious Zealotry- has stressed the planet. Something no one wants to talk about.”

Almost immediately, Glick’s pro-family planning message was called out by many who claimed she was “advocating for eugenics.”

Some told Glick to delete the post and issue an apology, but the tweet remained live through the afternoon Friday.

Others simply claimed that the Manhattan politician was uninformed on the issue.

A New York Post article even compared Glick’s comments to the sentiments of Thanos – the fictional villain from Marvel’s “Avengers” franchise – when he attempted to justify his plot to wipe out half of the universe’s population.

Still, Glick defended the comments, saying she was advocating for women’s reproductive rights.

“I’m advocating for women to be able to control their own bodies- you should consider how you don’t get that,” she wrote in response to one critic.

The Post noted that this is not the first time Glick has made controversial population comments.

According to the report, in 2019, she held up legislation to legalize paid surrogacy in New York State. Shortly before then, she also told an Assembly hearing on climate change that there is “too many people on the planet.”
