NY, NJ both report over 3,000 new COVID cases: 'These numbers are going in the wrong direction'

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York state and New Jersey both recorded more than 3,000 new coronavirus cases on Saturday amid a nationwide surge in the virus.

New York reported 3,587 cases, while New Jersey had 3,207 new cases.

It's the highest number of new daily cases New York has seen since early May and the highest New Jersey has seen since late April, though the states are both testing a lot more people each day than they were months ago.

New York's new cases were out of 163,291 tests conducted Friday—a positivity rate of 2.19%.

New York reported 1,381 hospitalizations, while New Jersey had 1,392 patients hospitalized.

New York also recorded 18 more deaths, bringing its death toll to 25,928. New Jersey saw 11 more deaths, meaning 14,625 people have now lost their lives in that state since the pandemic began.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned there are "several warning flags in New York," while Gov. Phil Murphy said his state's numbers are "going in the wrong direction" as cases continue to surge across the U.S.

"The challenge for our state has been to manage the increase and try to ensure the spikes in other states don't impact us too much," Cuomo said in a statement. "As we head into winter months, it's going to take the work of all New Yorkers to ensure we don't go back to where we were this spring - I understand COVID fatigue is real, but it's on all of us to stay vigilant and wear our masks, wash our hands, remain socially distant and stay New York Tough."

Murphy shared a similar sentiment on Twitter, writing: "This pandemic is real, and these numbers are going in the wrong direction. Wear a mask. Social distance. Stay safe."
