Person of interest in CT killing opens fire at officer: police

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A man who police say is a person of interest in a Hartford homicide opened fire into the driver's side window of a city police cruiser early Tuesday and narrowly missed the officer inside, authorities said.

The officer, who has not been named, was patrolling the city's North End at about 1:30 a.m. when the man approached her cruiser, authorities said. As they were talking, the man pulled a gun and shot at her, police said.

The officer suffered facial cuts from window glass shattered by the bullets, police said.

Officials said the man, Jose Cajigas, 31, tried to run away but was arrested by other officers on attempted murder and weapons charges.

"This was an unprovoked attack on one of our officers that was trying to provide assistance to her attacker," Police Chief Jason Thody said in a statement. "It puts a spotlight on the dangers police officers face, even in some of the most routine situations."

Police said Cajigas is a person of interest in the shooting death of a 53-year-old woman Monday.

It was not immediately clear if Cajigas has a lawyer who could respond to the allegations. He was detained on $2 million bail.
