NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Nassau County Executive Laura Curran joined the widow of NYPD Bomb Squad Det. Luis Alvarez on Thursday to unveil the county’s new 9/11 monument.
The monument at Eisenhower Park in Westbury pays tribute to first responders who lost their lives to illness years after the rescue operation at Ground Zero.

The unveiling of the 6,500-pound, red granite monument was part of the county’s 20th Anniversary of 9/11 Remembrance and Recitation of Names Ceremony.
The new monument is being added to the park’s existing 9/11 Memorial, which honors the 348 Nassau residents who were killed on Sept. 11, 2001.

"I was humbled to be joined by Laine Alvarez, wife of the late NYPD Bomb Squad Det. Luis Alvarez, for the unveiling of our new 9/11 Responders monument," Curran tweeted.
Back in May, Det. Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Park was unveiled in Oceanside.
Alvarez became a national figure for the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund when he testified with comedian Jon Stewart at an emotional Congressional hearing in June 2019. He died that same month at the age of 53 after battling cancer stemming from his work at Ground Zero.
