NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19, the president announced Friday.
“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” he tweeted.
The first lady followed suit, tweeting, "As too many Americans have done this year, @potus & I are quarantining at home after testing positive for COVID-19. We are feeling good & I have postponed all upcoming engagements. Please be sure you are staying safe & we will all get through this together."
White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows told reporters Friday that Trump had “mild symptoms” and was working from the White House residence.
“He continues to be not only in good spirits but very energetic," Meadows said. "We talked a number of times this morning. I got the five or six things that he had tasked me to do, like I do every single morning. He is certainly wanting to make sure we stay engaged."
Meadows confirmed that the White House knew Hope Hicks, one of Trump’s closest advisors, had tested positive before the president attended a fundraiser at his golf club in New Jersey on Thursday afternoon.
“I can tell you in terms of Hope Hicks, we discovered that right as Marine One was taking off yesterday,” Meadows said.
The first lady's chief of staff, Stephanie Grisham, told ABC News on Friday that the Trumps' 14-year-old son, Barron Trump, tested negative for COVID-19.
“Barron has tested negative and all precautions are being taken to ensure he’s kept safe and healthy,” Grisham said.
Dr. Sean Conley, the physician to the president, said in a memo released by the White House, that the Trumps tested positive for SARS-COv-2. "The President and First Lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence," he wrote in the memo.
Vice President Mike Pence's press secretary said Pence and second lady Karen Pence had tested negative for COVID-19.
"This morning, Vice President Pence and the Second Lady tested negative for COVID-19. Vice President Pence remains in good health and wishes the Trumps well in their recovery," press secretary Devin O'Malley tweeted.
Dr. Jesse T. Schonau, a White House physician, said Pence does not need to quarantine after testing negative for COVID.
“Earlier this morning under my care, Vice President Mike Pence tested negative for COVID-19,” Schonau said in a White House press release. “Under the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Vice President is not considered a close contact with any individuals who have tested positive for COVID, including President Donald J. Trump. Vice President Mike Pence does not need to quarantine.”
“Vice President Mike Pence remains in good health and is free to go about his normal activities,” Schonau added.
Trump 2020 campaign manager Bill Stepien said all campaign events featuring the president would be postponed or held virtually for the time being.
“All previously announced campaign events involving the President’s participation are in the process of being moved to virtual events or are being temporarily postponed," Stepien said in a statement. "In addition, previously announced events involving members of the First Family are also being temporarily postponed. All other campaign events will be considered on a case-by-case basis and we will make any relevant announcements in the days ahead. Vice President Mike Pence, who has tested negative for COVID-19, plans on resuming his scheduled campaign events. Any further information about the President will come from the White House.”
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel also found out she had tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, the RNC said Friday.
The RNC released a statement: “After a member of her family tested positive for COVID-19, the Chairwoman was tested for the virus. On Wednesday afternoon, she got confirmation she was COVID-19 positive. She has been at her home in Michigan since last Saturday.”
McDaniel was reportedly with the president as recently as last Friday.
Joe Biden released a statement on Twitter Friday morning reacting to Trump’s diagnosis.
“Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family,” Biden wrote.
Biden's primary care physician, Dr. Kevin O'Connor, said later on Friday that the Democratic nominee and his wife, Jill Biden, tested negative for COVID-19.
"Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden underwent PCR testing for COVID-19 today and COVID-19 was not detected. I am reporting this out in my capacity as both Vice President Biden and Dr. Biden’s primary care physician," O'Connor said in a statement.
Trump and Biden shared a debate stage in Cleveland on Tuesday.
White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said he didn't expect Trump's positive diagnosis to impact the economy. He said other heads of state have had the virus and recovered.
“I don’t think it’s going to have an effect,” Kudlow said. “I think this will be over before long.”
Earlier on Thursday, Trump had told Sean Hannity on Fox News that he and the first lady had been tested and were awaiting the results after Hicks tested positive for COVID-19.
"So she did test positive," Trump said of Hicks. "I just heard about this. She tested positive. She's a hard worker. A lot of masks. She wears masks a lot. But she tested positive. I just went out with a test. The first lady also went out with a test. So whether we quarantine or whether we have it, I don't know .... So I just went for a test and we'll see what happens. Who knows."
He added, "She's fantastic and she's done a great job. But it's very, very hard when you're with people from the military and law enforcement and they want to hug you and kiss you ... I was surprised to hear about Hope, but she's a very warm person ... She knows there is a risk. But she is young. I went out for test and the first lady also, because we spent a lot of time with Hope. So we'll see what happens."
