NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- President Donald Trump was in New Jersey for a fundraiser hours before he and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for COVID-19.

The president attended a fundraiser at his golf club in Bedminster on Thursday afternoon before returning to the White House.

A person who was at the fundraiser told CNN that the president “seemed subdued when speaking to an indoor roundtable event and later to a group of supporters gathered outside.” Other people said “his voice sounded hoarse,” according to CNN.

Early Friday morning, the president announced he and the first lady had tested positive for COVID-19.

Gov. Phil Murphy and first lady Tammy Murphy, released a joint statement Friday morning wishing the Trumps a speedy recovery and urging anyone who attended the fundraiser to self-quarantine and get tested.

"Tammy and I send our best wishes to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a speedy and complete return to good health. If there is one thing we have learned in New Jersey over these months, it's that we pull together and support everyone fighting this virus," the Murphys wrote.

"The contact-tracing process is underway," they continued. "We urge everyone who attended yesterday's event in Bedminster to take full precautions, including self-quarantining and getting tested."

The president attended the fundraiser a day after his senior adviser Hope Hicks began showing symptoms, according to the Associated Press.

Hicks began feeling mild symptoms during the plane ride home from a rally in Minnesota on Wednesday evening, an administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity told the AP. She was isolated from other passengers aboard the plane and tested positive Thursday.

According to the New York Times, Trump had fewer aides with him during his trip to New Jersey and some who’d been around Hicks this week had masks on.
