HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A sinkhole opened outside a Suffolk County home on Thursday and swallowed three people, injuring two of them, police said.
Yellow police tape surrounded the one-story home on W. 10th Street in Huntington Station following the dramatic early morning rescue.
The 70-year-old homeowner and two friends, both in their 60s, fell into the six-foot sinkhole around 6 a.m.
The homeowner walked out the front door, didn’t see the nearby sinkhole and fell inside, according to surveillance video. Her two friends also ended up in the hole.
The homeowner and one friend was injured, but they are expected to make a full recovery, police said. The third person was not injured.
There was a lot of commotion in the neighborhood as dozens of police and rescue personnel descended on the home.
The family has lived at the home since the late 1990s, according to a relative, who called the incident “terrifying.”
The cause of the sinkhole is under investigation. It’s not yet clear if Wednesday’s wet weather played a role.
Most houses in Suffolk County have cesspools, which have caused sinkhole to open in the past. But at this home, the cesspool is in the backyard, not in the front where the sinkhole is.
