YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) — A man was killed and several families were displaced by a fire in Yonkers Friday morning, authorities said.

The fire started at about 5 a.m. at a five-story apartment building, police said. Photos from the scene show flames billowing out of the building’s rear windows.

The Yonkers fire department extended a ladder onto the roof of the building to fight the blaze, the Journal News reported. At least one firefighter was taken from the scene on a stretcher.

The identity of the man who died in the fire was not immediately released. The Red Cross and the Yonkers Office of Emergency Management were helping families that were forced to evacuate.
