WADING RIVER, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued four canoers in the Long Island Sound off of Wading River Tuesday night, authorities said.

Darwin Ortis, 32, Adrian Zelaya, 32, Walter Noriega, 47, and Gelyn Linairs, 41, were in two canoes on the Long Island Sound, less than a mile from Wading River Beach, when they capsized and went overboard into approximately 58 degree water.

Linairs called 911 at 7:23 p.m., officials said.

Aviation Section officers discovered the group in the water and directed Marine Bureau officers aboard Marine Delta to their location.

At about 7:48 p.m., the canoers, three of whom were wearing life preservers, were taken aboard Marine Delta before being transferred to a Sound Beach Fire Department vessel.

Ortis, Zelaya, Noriega and Linairs were all transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of hypothermia.
